The Outliers project (eventually Tsu and the Outliers graphic novel) grew from my desire to tell a “hero’s journey” from the perspective of an “atypical” youth. Much of the inspiration came from the unknown and unknowable aspects of autism and neuro-diversity that became a part of my life through parenthood and other experiences. Part of the inspiration came from the unknown mysteries that I’d always had affection for, including bigfoots, chubacabras and humanzees. I wanted to put these unknowns together, center stage and set up some surprising and unfolding narrative adventures.

The artwork below represents the many stages of creating an unconventional concept pitch, self-publishing through kickstarter (with many “incentive” pieces developed), and finally finding a home for Tsu with the fantastic ODOD Books, the youth imprint of Uncivilized Books. Book excerpt here
